Founded in 1997, Sgrîn, the screen agency for Wales is a private company
funded by the Welsh Development Agency, the Arts Council of Wales, broadcasters
S4C and BBC Wales and a number of independent Welsh producers. Its role is
to "formulate a strategic vision for the development of the industrial
and cultural aspects of film, television and new media in Wales. The emphasis
is on both Welsh culture and the Welsh media industry.
Sgrîn is responsible for assessing Lottery applications, making recommendations
and will make conditional grants for feature-film production. It also runs
its own scheme shorts films, 'Screen Gems' for three-minute films and 'Animate
It' for animation, and provides export assistance grants to film companies.
Like other screen agencies, Sgrîn also supports education, exhibition
and new media in Wales and, through the Wales Screen Commission, promotes
Wales as a base for incoming productions.
