American Memory from the Library of Congress

The incomparable 'American Memory' section of the vast Library of Congress site includes a 'Performing Arts' section, with playscripts, theatre bills, sound recordings and motion pictures, including Coca-Cola advertisements, early American animation, films from the Theodore Roosevelt collection, early American variety acts, early film of New York and San Francisco, films of the Spanish-American War, and Edison films and sound recordings. All films are available in Real, MPEG and QuickTime formats, and there is excellent supporting catalogue information.

This new website from Skillset is aimed at people working in the industry, as well as those looking to get into it. It offers a huge range of media courses, job descriptions and career paths, a storyboard guide and information about the latest training bursaries available:

Anima
One of the most creative and beautiful sites o­n the web, mostly devoted to animations of the work of 'pre-cinema' pioneers such as Donisthorpe and Le Prince, and the chronophotographs (sequence photographs) of late nineteenth-century experimenters such as Demeny, Marey and Muybridge. The section 'Chronophotographical Projections' is particularly recommended.

Becta is the Government's key partner in the strategic development and delivery of its information and communications technology (ICT) and e-learning strategy for the schools and the learning and skills sectors.

British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society (BKSTS)
Organisation which aims to 'encourage, sustain, educate, train and represent all those who, creatively or technologically, are involved in the business of providing moving images and associated sound in any form and through any media'. The site includes information o­n careers in film and television, courses, and links to related organisations and resources.

British Universities Newsreel Database (BUND)

This BUFVC database lists 160,000 news stories produced by twenty-one British cinema newsreels and cinemagazines, with details of production, content and release taken from the original newsreel issue sheets. A programme of digitisation is now adding some 80,000 newsreel documents to the database in PDF format. Access to the BUND is restricted to UK higher education and BUFVC members o­nly, but there is a trial version of the database, and there is free access to background information, including a biographical database of newsreel staff, newsreel histories and articles.
